Lolo Pass rode very well yesterday (firm and cold snow) as we tried out a route that we've been looking at on our snow mobile maps. We had two cars and left one down at Lolo Hot Springs and then drove the other to the top of the pass. Fat Bike shuttle run for about 15 miles, and boy was it a fun and fast day. We also coincided our trip with the Snow Mobile Association annual breakfast up at the warming hut. Should have seen the looks and comments we received when we showed up out in the middle of no where. Funny thing.....it didn't take long and we had a line of folks wanting to try them out. : )

of the recommendation of Red Barn Riley and Thomas, fatbikes set tracks in Blodgett Canyon. Since the trail gets a fair amount of hiking usage during the winter months it seems to pack the snow down well and both Rick and Tracy said the trail was awesome for the fat tires. Just perfect.

It's been one of those long time goals...to add an espresso machine to the shop. Personally for my own personal love of coffee, but also/and largely based on an experience that i had once when Tracy and i were living in Kansas City. Hanging out with good friends Doug P. and Ian Kirby and probably after a bike ride they take me into their favorite bike shop (at the time i believe we were all working at Bike Source) .... Old Towne Cyclery which i believe is now called ACME. I absolutely love visiting different shops and when you visit one that is good, and soulful you will hopefully remember it. In this case OTC was a pleasant shop and as soon as you walk in the front door you are hit with a plethora of different aromas.....lube, grease, butyl rubber, and in this case .... coffee, the beautiful fragrance of coffee. I slowly make my way around the shop. Doug and Ian go straight into the back room to find Bob who was the shop manager at the time. Bob was a bike junkie too and more than happy to show me around since it was my first visit. Old Towne was your classic roadie shop with as many used road bikes as there were new. And i say classic in terms of an abundance of steel framed bikes and an absence of soul less carbon. There were also two things that stuck out....an appreciation for old classic Campagnolo parts and excellent espresso. They had both of these items highlighted front and center. A glass case FULL of used Campy parts and directly behind that was a vintage looking machine that also brewed a mean cup of coffee. Thanks for that tour and cup of coffee. Bob, i truly hope i get to repay you someday for your generosity.

So stop on in for a visit....it's winter now and much slower out here in the shop. A perfect time of the year to pull up a stool and belly up to the bar. Espresso is now on the menu....

on the 4th ride we ditched the chickas for a spin down grafton....and too much fun to take any additional photos. A chunky, technical wonderful trail which was kind of like blodgett canyon but at a 35% gradient (maybe steeper in spots) and nasty exposure thrown in the mix. Made it down safe and sound.....hit a few of the drops and jumps at the bottom just to push the luck. Good stuff and was feeling pretty good about myself until i heard from the fella at the local bike shop that he made it down on a fixed gear mtb !

This Sunday is the MMA fundraiser Bike the Bowl. The ride is from Snowbowl parking lot to Point 6. We have a small turnout so we are looking for some more riders just to pump up the event. There will be no fundraising obligations or entry fees, you just need to show up bike and drink some beer. The ride starts at 9:30 (soft start). The band and pizza starts at Noon. Come up to ride or just enjoy the band and pretty ladies. The Althausers, Skinners, and Radlowski's will be up there all day. Come and bring the family.
Their will be a time trial from from the parking lot to point 6. The fastest recorded time is 59:56seconds. What's your time?

Built using a spare frame and fork that was hanging around the shop, we decided to spec it out with shimano alfine internal geared hubs and a bitchin' supernova led light powered by a generator front hub (also notice the fancy internal cable routing on the light). Had a great afterwork ride with my 10 yr old son Caelen and took him up to Fred Burr for his first visit. A 3 mile route (6 miles total, out and back) up to the lake, which basically is the remnants of an old road put in to build the reservoir..... agriculture was and always has been important here in the Bitterroot Valley and you can find man made reservoirs at the top of many drainages. The road basically climbs three miles, is rough in places, and follows a well flowing creek. This trail is a popular bitterroot trail and you will see other trail users...hikers, atv, and an abundance of horses...what's parked at the trail head will tip a person off as to who they might encounter. Me, i ran into friends, Jean and then Steve a little while after.

On the map it didn't look like much, just a nice 100 mile ride taking us into Idaho starting from those fantastic springs in Jackson MT and then with a little luck another 100 or so the next day to get back. A popsicle loop of the south bitterroots with an overnight camp stuck some place in the middle. We'd be traveling on some sparsely used back country roads following the original path of the Nez Perce trail. What our gazzetteer map didn't show was how tattered and rough these roads would be. Nor did it really paint a good picture of how steep Bannock and Lemhi passes were, not to mention all the rolling terrain in between. And of course the only way to capture the beauty of The Big Hole Valley is to be there yourself. My photos don't do the scenery justice.

Excited to be riding for two full days with no hurry and no real plan other than trying to make it somewhere into Idaho via Bannock Pass to camp. Maybe Leadore or Tendoy.

wet and lush gives way to windy and arid

it was about here on our ride when i noticed another set of tracks. No..maybe three tracks. Hmmm, a bike pulling a trailer i guess and figure he/she is going much slower judging by the wavey lines in the road. Up ahead a silhouette, curiosity gets the best of me and my speed increases until i have our stranger in clear sight. Finally i meet up with this new found soul and first thing i notice is that he's walking and pushing a baby stroller full of gear and water. A baby stroller....that's some weird shit out in the middle of nowhere. Now i'm even more curious. We share stories.....he's unsure of the day or how long ago he left from the same town that we departed from. Maybe three or four days. Hmmm, he scratches his head in thought. He's been WALKING the entire Nez Perce trail all the way from Oregon. Months. I'm still curious but not brave enough to ask for a photo. Crazy but interesting none the less. We wish him luck and depart ways....now climbing our way into Idaho. Our little adventure not so grand now.

the pass is close...almost there. Rick searches for it.

a much needed break, and photo opp. at the top of Bannock Pass. Idaho/MT state line. A short stop up top and rick and i were eager forthe decent into Leadore. Coasting never felt so good.

Finally arriving in Leadore at 7pm we notice this great sign. So of course after 9 hours of pedaling we take them up on their claim. A little chili to top mine and of course a beer to wash it down....when in Leadore, bud lite.

While eating we pulled out the map and made the decision to pedal the additional 24 miles to Tendoy which theoretically would make tomorrow's trip a bit shorter allowing a soak at jackson. We bust our asses to make Tendoy before dark getting there with JUST enough time to put the tent up at the Tendoy school house. The mosquito's were just fierce enough to keep us confined to the tent which was fine as my sleeping pad felt really good. I was lights out within the hour.

The next morning, at the base of our next pass we make a quick breakfast and coffee and then settle in for 18 miles of climbing. Of course, lemhi pass offered up some good views too.

The last three or four miles of Lemhi are very steep and the 50 pounds of bike and gear started to mount, knees and muscles ached. I was looking more and more forward to that hotsprings soak.

There is a rock on the top that states the specifics. And back into Montana we go.

and a quick peek into Reservoir Lake, which sits just off the road a little bit. A nice campground to remember that also appears to have fishing potential.

From here back to Jackson was just a hop and a skip. This was a great route for an overnighter, it could have been a bit shorter with more time around a campfire but not a complaint. The next two shots are taken just west of town. Probably my favorite two. Also, another fine ride with good buddy Shrekie. Thanks for recommending this route, a little bit better than last years Lolo motorway route and 100 down trees ?? Can't wait to start planning the next trip.....Magruder Corridor anyone ?

Saturday was spent turning wrenches at the tenth running of ratpod, an amazing 130 mile road ride that draws 600 participants and raises funds for camp mak-a-dream. Always very proud to volunteer our time for the kiddos of camp mak-a-dream and for the cyclists that make this ride a goal every year. Ratpods weekend festivities began with a friday mtb ride up long tom trail just north of wise river.....a great trail that takes you up along 7 miles of streamside gradient, from here we attempted to hike up to an upper mining road. Denied access due to snow levels.....we got to freeride back down the sage brush covered hillside for an out and back. Long tom trail....worth checking out if you're in the neighborhood.

Hope everyone had a fantastic memorial weekend. While it was wet and cool here a few of us still managed to sneak in a few rides......for me it was a Saturday trip up railroad creek, after a busy day at the shop on the XR650 exploring old abandoned logging roads. Then an early sunday morning climb up fire creek with my wife in the wet and snow, and then today a ride around lake como with my wife and son caelen. Watching my nine year old son float across sections of granite on a mountain bike is about as good as it gets...at least for me. When we first started on our ride this afternoon on the trail that first starts off as pavement and then quickly ends to a perfect ribbon of singletrack.....my son says on que "aaahhhhh, that's much better".
